Arsenal's £5.5m bid for Roma defender Kostas Manolas has been rejected by the Italian club.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has identified central defence, rather than central midfield, as the area that he will look to strengthen in the transfer window and the Greek international is one of the targets.
But Roma coach Rudi Garcia wants the player to stay.
The Giallorossi lost Marquinhos to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2013 and Medhi Benatia to Bayern Munich last season and are not ready to sell yet another centre-back during the summer transfer window.
