Defender Branislav Ivanovic admits Southampton made it difficult for Chelsea on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.
After Manchester City's shocking defeat at Burnley on Saturday, the Blues could have opened an eight point lead at the top of the table.
But Ivanovic was still happy with the draw, saying that the Blues have taken one more step towards the title.
"It was a hard, difficult game," Ivanovic told the club's official website.
"We started well but after we conceded a goal we maybe lost control.
"In the second half we tried to give our best, we created some chances but we didn't score. I think with a little bit more luck we could have got three points.
"We played very well in the second half and controlled the game. It was difficult to score because they defend well and they are dangerous on the counter attack, but after the game we are now one more point ahead of Manchester City."
Asked about the penalty shout, the Serbian explained: "I was at full speed, he stood on me and I went down.
"The decision was the referee's, so I don't have anything to say."
