Internazionale coach Roberto Mancini says his side tried until the very end to qualify for next season's Europa League.
The Nerazzurri needed a win to keep their European hopes alive but defeat at Genoa means they will end the season with nothing to show for it.
"We tried until the very end to qualify for Europe," Mancini told Sky Sport Italy.
"But despite doing exceptionally well upfront, we keep making terrible mistakes and when it happens it's not easy to win.
"The last two games are the image of our season, we created three glorious goal-scoring opportunities before Kucka's goal. We cannot just blame the defensive department, we have to work on the mental aspect of the game as well.
"I don't want to blame anyone for their second goal, it's useless at this stage. We are bitterly disappointed, that's all.
"I am optimistic even if results didn't go our way. We are sorry for the fans and the president for not reaching the Europa League, we will try to bounce back next season.
"What we want to do [ahead of next season] is to bring players who can help the young ones to improve."
