Arsenal and Manchester United were given fresh hope of signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan after Barcelona opted not to chase the player.
The Spanish giants were rumoured to be very close to signing the 24-year-old but journalist Alfredo Martinez says that the German is not a target for Luis Enrique.
With Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini all expected to leave the Emirates, it is clear the Gunners desperately need to strengthen in midfield and Gundogan would join Arsenal's fast-growing list of German players at the club.
The player was coy when asked about his future last month but is expected to leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
"I'll leave it open as to whether they continue without me. BVB are a great team and a really good coach is coming," Gundogan is quoted as saying by Goal.com.
"I don't know how the team will look next season. The challenge will be to get the great potential of this team back on the pitch. We managed to do that too little during the last year."
