Roma coach Rudi Garcia says his side created enough chances to beat Fiorentina.
Seydou Keita's 77th minute goal means the Giallorossi will take an important scoreline to next week's second leg at the Stadio Olimpico.
And the Frenchman wants the same type of performance when the two teams face again on March 19.
"The team responded well after losing two players through injury," Garcia said.
"They [the players] fought hard against bad luck. But besides the first twenty minutes of the game, where we allowed Fiorentina to counter with ease, we played with character and personality.
"I am happy [with the draw] but also a little bit upset because I believe we could have won.
"We approached the game in the same way we did against Feyenoord away from home and at home against Verona in the first half and also the final minutes against Juventus.
"The lads have to understand that when they show intensity they have more probability of success."
