Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger will not feature in tonight's game away at Newcastle United.
The German suffered the injury in the last part of the FA Cup game against Sheffield United and will not recover in time to face the Magpies.
"Bastian is injured, that we know," van Gaal told MUTV.
"We have seen that because he could not move. In spite of playing more or less with 10-and-a-half men, we beat Sheffield United and we were very happy with that.
"That [back-to-back matches] is difficult, because it is so close to the match against Sheffield United.
"We have to recover. Yesterday we recovered but we have to see if the players are still overloaded or not. Until this moment, the players have not arrived so we have to wait and see.
"After I know all the data, I can line up. That is why it is always difficult in a period when we have to play a lot of matches. You have to wait to see how the players are recovering of the load in the match."
Asked about the return of Adnan Januzaj and the decision not to deploy him against Reading for the Under-21s, the Dutchman said: "We have reconsidered.
"We think we have to build him up for the game and not risk too much by putting him in a game at once."
