Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal revealed that he replaced Matteo Darmian with Antonio Valencia at half-time against Southampton to block Dusan Tadic on the wing.
The Italian has been one of the most impressive players for the Red Devils this season but was a surprise half-time change on Sunday afternoon.
The Dutchman praised the Ecuadorian for his performance and was also full of praise for goalkeeper David De Gea.
"It [Antonio Valencia for Matteo Darmian] was a tactical change because Tadic had a lot of space and was very dangerous for us," van Gaal told reporters.
"I wanted to eliminate that with Valencia and he did that very well I think.
"He [David de Gea] is the goalkeeper to do that. Also, Sergio Romero has saved us in games.
"Now David De Gea did that with that remarkable save from the header of Fonte. It was fantastic. Therefore, we are very happy that we shall stay with us."
