Paul Scholes: Why Manchester United should keep Angel Di Maria

By

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says the Red Devils need Angel Di Maria if they are to fight for next season's Champions League.

United spent £59.7m to sign the 27-year-old from Real Madrid last summer but he failed to live up to his price-tag after a very disappointing season at Old Trafford.

But Scholes believes the Argentinean will be a key player in Louis van Gaal's squad next season and should not be tempted by Paris Saint-Germain's lucrative offer.

"A good start but, for £59.7m, the hope was that he would give United much more," Scholes wrote in his weekly Independent column.

"I accept he has had problems off the pitch settling into life in Manchester, but there is no way he can see the season as anything other than a disappointment.

"This was, after all, the best player in last season's Champions League final.

"Nevertheless, the quality is there and I don't think United can afford to lose him.

"They need that kind of player if they are to compete at the highest level in the Champions League. Let's see what next season brings."
