Manchester United have joined the race to sign German defender Benedikt Howedes.
The 27-year-old was linked with a possible move to Arsenal at the start of the month and will leave the Germans if his buy-out clause fee of £12m is met.
Earlier this month, Schalke 04 CEO Horst Heldt admitted that the player could leave this summer.
"It's no secret that he could leave by exercising the release clause in his contract," Heldt told Die Welt.
"He is yet to take a decision but he is expected to take one very soon.
"Our desire is to keep him at the club."
