Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini praised veteran midfielder Frank Lampard after his side's 3-2 win over Sunderland on Thursday.
The Citizens again let a two-goal lead slip away but it was the former Chelsea man who headed home from a Gael Clichy cross to give City all three points and a perfect start to the new year.
"We played a very good 90 minutes, we moved the ball well and the only mistake was to give away a second goal from a penalty," Pellegrini said.
"The penalty was too easy for them. It was our mistake. We have Frank who scores goals but we also had four or five clear chances to score. Costel Pantilimon was their best player.
"I think Frank Lampard is a very important player, particularly in these cases when you need a goal."
The Chilean added that the way his team are giving away leads is a concern as he again confirmed that no big signings will be made during the January transfer window.
"We played against 10 defenders for the whole game. Of course I am concerned that again we threw away a two-goal lead but it was different than against Burnley," added the City boss.
"Don't expect Manchester City to be active in the transfer window. Yes, we can act, maybe bring in a player or two on loan but we are not rushing to do that."
