Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says anything can happen in the race for a top four finish and believes his side would be in a much stronger position had they performed better in the first part of the season.
The Reds moved up to sixth place in the table after the impressive away win against Southampton, just three points from third-placed Arsenal.
And with no defeats in the Premier League in 2015, Liverpool are now strong contenders to qualify for next season's Champions League.
"We knew if we drew the game today, there were enough games still to make a challenge for the top four," Rodgers said.
"But to win the game was a giant step. We've beaten Southampton home and away that's a sign of how well we're playing.
"We came under a lot of pressure in the first 15 minutes. The only disappointment was we could have been better on the ball, but the conditions were very difficult.
"The overall performance was very good.
"Phil Coutinho's goal was a wonderful goal in terms of the system of how we play, working the ball to the sides and drawing players out. It's a wonderful strike and a wonderful goal.
"[Southampton's penalty appeal] Sometimes, decisions can go against you. I can see why Kevin Friend didn't give it. The ball's getting away from him and he pushes his body into Joe Allen. Then Joe swings at the ball and doesn't make contact.
"I thought Kevin was excellent, he was under pressure from the crowd but he had great control of the game.
"It's exciting. It's fantastic. All the teams are up there. My only regret is that we didn't really get going until November. We're three points off third place, which is great."
