France head coach Didier Deschamps admits midfielder Paul Pogba was not at his very best in his side's opener against Romania on Friday night.
The Juventus star was criticised after a below-par performance with the 47-year-old declaring that he can be a stronger influence in France's midfield.
The youngster is a target for Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain according to reports in Italy.
"Paul, of course, can play better than that", Deschamps said.
"I'm not going to be too hard on him but his potential is such that he can contribute more than he showed tonight.
"I made a choice [with Anthony Martial].
"I don't know how many minutes were remaining. I wanted to give us an attacking boost. We had four attacking players to try to secure the victory."
